Thebault, Anne; Chollet, Bruno; Robert, Maeva.

Thebault, Anne; Robert, Maeva; Renault, Tristan; Dumais, M.; Goulletquer, Philippe.

The main objectives of the Mollusc Pathology Network (REPAMO) are to prevent introductions or outbreaks of infectious agents, prevent spread within a farm and especially from one farm to another, to study ways of decreasing the impact of infectious agent and to monitor the development of these pathogens in order to guarantee the health status of oysters exchanged with our commercial partners. On the whole, REPAMO's activities have not changed and include: - monitoring the development of diseases that have to be reported to authorities and carrying out analyses to classify zones: bonamiosis and marteiliosis; - baseline monitoring of farmed and wild populations of bivalve molluscs; - studying cases of abnormal mortality events; - controlling mollusc...

Etude des agents pathogènes et épidémiologie ArchiMer
Renault, Tristan; Le Roux, Frederique; Berthe, Franck; Robert, Maeva; Chollet, Bruno; Gerard, Andre.

The REPAMO network (network ofmollusc pathology), created in 1986, ensures the survey of shellfish health status along French coasts according? to European Directives 91/67/EEC and 95/70/EEC. The aims of the network are 1 - to prevent the introduction and spread of exotic pathogens, 2-to study the means to decrease the impact of pathogens already present and to survey their evolution. In 2003, the REPAMO network focused on the survey oflisted diseases (bonamiosis and marteiliosis) in two areas under agreement process (Banc de Granville and zone X) and on the study of abnormal morlalities. Number of reported abnormal morlalities has increased in 2003. This rise can be partly explained by the recent network restructuring, but also by the summer heatwave and...

Repamo network : a surveillance tool for mollusc health ArchiMer

At the present time losses due to diseases are one of main factors limiting the aquaculture development. Unceasing increase of exchanges between different countries favours the risk of introduction and propagation of new pathogen agents. At the beginning of the 90's the European Union laid the surveillance of mollusc health inside each Member State in order to protect the safety of exchanges. Indeed few measures are available to protect molluscs from diseases. Only the prophylactic approach is possible; this approach is based on a zoosanitary surveillance of mollusc populations and/or a development of resistant populations against some diseases. Created in 1986, the French network for surveillance and monitoring of mollusc health (REPAMO) ensures the...

Molecular characterisation of an Australian isolate of Bonamia exitiosa ArchiMer
Corbeil, Serge; Arzul, Isabelle; Robert, Maeva; Berthe, Franck; Cochennec, Nathalie; Crane M, Mark.
An Australian (New South Wales) isolate of Bonamia was characterised at the molecular level by sequencing the 18S-ITS-1 region of the small subunit rRNA operon obtained from flat oysters Ostrea angasi shown to be infected by histological examination. Sequence data alignment with homologous genes from 2 other isolates of Bonamia (New Zealand and France) revealed high levels of nucleotide identity with both isolates. However, the Australian Bonamia is shown to be more closely related to the New Zealand isolate, suggesting the existence of an oceanic subgroup of Bonamia.

Viral gametocytic hypertrophy of Crassostrea gigas in France: from occasional records to disease emergence? ArchiMer
Garcia, Celine; Robert, Maeva; Arzul, Isabelle; Chollet, Bruno; Joly, Jean-pierre; Miossec, Laurence; Comtet, Thierry; Berthe, Franck.
Viral gametocytic hypertrophy was reported for the first time in 2001 in Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas in France. Since this date, the number of reported cases and the distribution area have increased every year; however, the cases are not associated with macroscopic signs or increased mortality rates. Both male and female gametes were hypertrophied and basophilic inclusions were observed in gamete nuclei, Transmission electron microscopy revealed the presence of viral particles in these intranuclear basophilic inclusions. These particles had characteristics similar to those of the Papillomaviridae and Polyomaviridae families: they were small, non-enveloped, icosahedral, and 44 to 56 nm in diameter, The viral particles were found in male, female and...

The French network for the surveillance and monitoring of mollusc health (REPAMO) was officially set up in 1992 to control the shellfish status along the French coasts according to the European directives 91/67/EEC and 95/70/EC. The objectives are 1) the surveillance of notifiable diseases present in France (Bonamiosis and Marteiliosis of flat oysters Ostrea edulis), 2) the surveillance of health status of cultured and wild populations of molluscs, 3) the study of abnormal mortality and 4) the control of exchanges from European and third countries. In this context, a new surveillance programme, called Active Targeted Survey, part of the REPAMO, was applied in 2004 in order to improve the monitoring of the health status of the French mollusc populations...

Effects of temperature and salinity on the survival of Bonamia ostreae parasite infecting falt oyster Ostrea edulis in sea water ArchiMer
Arzul, Isabelle; Bond, Celine; Gagnaire, Beatrice; Chollet, Bruno; Morga, Benjamin; Ferrand, Sylvie; Robert, Maeva; Renault, Tristan.
Bonamiosis due to the intrahaemocytic protistan parasite Bonamia ostreae is a European endemic disease affecting flat oysters Ostrea edulis. The parasite has been described in different ecosystems from estuaries to open sea and no clear correlations could be demonstrated between the development of the disease and environmental parameters such as temperature or salinity. The parasite life cycle, including its survival outside the host is not completely known. Nevertheless, the infection can be directly transmitted by cohabitation between infected and non infected oysters suggesting that the parasite does not need intermediate host to complete its cycle. In the present study, the impact of temperature and salinity on the survival of purified parasites...

Evidence for the involvement of pathogenic bacteria in summer mortalities of the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer
Garnier, Matthieu; Labreuche, Yannick; Garcia, Celine; Robert, Maeva; Nicolas, Jean-louis.
A study was conducted to investigate the involvement of bacteria in oyster mortalities during summer. Moribund and apparently healthy oysters were sampled during mortality events along the French coast and in rearing facilities, usually when temperature reached 19 degrees C or higher, and oysters were in the gonadal maturation phase. Hemolymph samples were aseptically withdrawn and submitted to bacteriological analysis. In healthy oysters, bacteria colonized hernolymph at low concentrations depending on the location. In most moribund oysters, bacteria were present in hemolymph and other tissues. These bacterial populations were more often diverse in oysters originating from the open sea than from facilities where animals were generally infected by a single...
